Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue consultation
Last year, crews responded to an average of 16 false alarms every day due to automatic fire alarms, placing an unnecessary burden on the Service’s resources and their ability to be ready and available for genuine emergencies.In the last five years, there have been more than 55,000 automatic fire alarms alerts, out of which just 42 needed the hose reel jet from a fire engines, which is less than 0.08%
The Service is looking at how to reduce the number of automatic fire alarms attended to make the Service more efficient, and make sure firefighters are able to respond to genuine emergencies
More detailed information about the consultation, and a link to a public survey for feedback, is available on the website www.dsfire.gov.uk/about-us/AFA-consultation. There will also be opportunities to question and answer events.
They want to make absolutely clear to communities that any change is only in response to an automatic alert and they will always attend if someone has reported a sign of fire
They will also always attend single domestic properties, such as houses, or where there is a known night-time sleeping risk
There are also a number of high-risk buildings where a response will be maintained. Details of these can be found in the consultation document

Wessex Water Community Drop-in Sessions
Community drop-insessions are being held at locations across Wessex Water supply area, where you will have the chance to speak with a Customer Adviser who will act as the point of contact for your local community.They can:
- answer questions about your bill
- refer you for support if you are struggling to pay your bill
- provide advice on saving water and avoiding blockages
- answer questions about water quality, plumbing and drainage
